The feel of spring is in the air, but unfortunately we are still having some really chilly nights and mornings. Most of our days are still cold enough that a sweater, cardigan or a jacket is necessary.
It can be a little difficult to dress appropriately for this time of year, and so as I shop for clothes to transition to spring, I typically keep three things in mind.
- Tights AND open toe shoe appropriate – when shopping for dresses for spring, I always ask myself if the dress can be worn with either open toe shoes OR with tights. For all daytime events (church, luncheons, etc.), if it’s below 50 degrees, I wear tights. In my opinion, anything below 50 is just too chilly to expose your legs unless it’s an evening event (or maybe Easter Sunday lol)! With the weather all over the place during February and March, I don’t want to buy a dress but have to keep putting off wearing it since the weather won’t warm up enough to go without tights. So I try to only buy things that will work with tights OR open toe shoes so that I can wear it whether warms up a little bit or if it’s a chilly spring day.
- Color and patterns – when I begin to shop for spring, I try to gravitate towards lighter colors. I love olive greens and maroons and wine colors, but these are colors that I wear more predominantly in the fall. I’m always on the lookout for blush color, light blues, whites, and camel colors. These soft colors are perfect for spring! I also take note of patterns. I love florals, especially black florals for late February, early March. I wore this dress to church yesterday but actually put tights and black booties with it, because it was only 42 degrees when I left for church. It’s still a great choice for this time of year because of the red and pink floral pattern! Look for florals and light colored stripes and polka dots – these are great patterns for spring!
- Fabric – The last thing I keep in mind for spring is the appropriate fabrics. Just like I do not wear linen in the winter, there are certain fabrics that I do not wear in the spring. I don’t wear corduroys and velvets in the spring! I also stay away from heavy sweaters, like cowl necks or heavier turtleneck sweaters. All of these have a wintery look and feel to them, so I save them for the appropriate season!
These are just a few of the main things that I’m mindful of as I begin to shop for spring! I love adding a few new pieces to my wardrobe every season, and I can’t wait to share with you some of the pieces that I bought for this spring season! Happy Monday!
